Yes, it does look like it’s something out of an episode of Saved By the Bell.
But this style table is becoming increasingly popular it already has a very strong cult following. And in another year or two, these things are going to go to auction just like how the mid-century modern stuff was being astronomically priced a few years back.
Now is your opportunity to get in on this stylish piece that will basically be an investment because these things are going to quadruple in price over the next year or two.
THE HISTORY OF MEMPHIS DESIGN:
The design movement began with a meeting in Milan, Italy, where designer Ettore Sottsass founded the 'Memphis Design' group named after a Bob Dylan song. Like most art, the movement was a counter argument against the rigidity of modern and minimalism.
The characteristics of Memphis furniture are decor would be considered as kitschy and garish, centering around vibrant colors, geometric shapes, bold patterns, stripes, clashing colors, abstract designs, and plastic laminate.
And as you can see from this table, this is classic Memphis style.
There are dealers selling Memphis side tables and coffee tables online. But these kitchen dining tables in the Memphis style are extremely hard to find.
This was purchased from a posh, high-end department store in Philadelphia about 35 years ago!
This beautiful and funky table is in excellent condition! It has been very, very well taken care of over the decades and it’s nearly flawless!
