PLEASE NOTE that the apparent discoloration in the upper portion of the painting is due to reflection on the glass and is not inherent to the mat or painting themselves, which are unblemished and uniform in coloration. George Tobi, a prominent north Florida artist, was born in Jacksonville in 1934. He lived and worked in historic St. Augustine, where he also sold his paintings through Gallery 44 on Aviles Street. He died in 2023.
His contributions to Florida’s artistic tapestry are renowned and celebrated by the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, established by the state legislature in 1986, recognizes individuals who have significantly impacted the arts.
Furthermore, his name now graces that Hall of Fame Wall in the rotunda of the Florida State Capitol. where alongside a framed image of this year’s inductees, he receives a commemorative bronze sculpture called “La Florida,” created by artist Enzo Torcoletti—a fellow St. Augustinian.
This piece--an outstanding example of his vision and talent--is from our large art collection, assembled over a more than 50-year time span. The collection consists of original paintings lithographs, photographs, drawings, etchings, and other types of prints, as well as some mixed media pieces, all of which we'll eventually be listing on Craigslist Marketplace.
